UNL to host free plant breeding symposium

Thursday, March 3, 2016

The third biennial University of Nebraska–Lincoln Plant Breeding Symposium will be held at the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center on March 29. Exploiting and Enhancing Genetic Variation: Addressing the Future Challenges in Plant Breeding is the theme for 2016.

David Hyten, associate professor of agronomy and horticulture, and graduate students from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, will host this symposium as part of the Dupont Plant Science Symposium series initiated in 2008. The goal of the symposium series is to enhance agricultural scientific literacy, stimulate collaboration and help build interest in plant breeding careers.

Speakers will include: Sally Mackenzie, UNL; Jim Holland, United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, North Carolina State University; Jesse Poland, Kansas State University; Timothy Close, University of California Riverside; and Wendy Srnic, Dupont-Pioneer.

This year’s event will feature four student speakers selected from submitted abstracts, and a poster session. Cash prizes will be awarded for the four student speakers and the top three posters. Student oral presentation abstracts are due March 4 and poster presentation abstracts are due March 21.

UNL Plant Breeding symposium is free and open to the public with a free catered lunch. It will be available via webinar to the broader scientific community around the world. Plant Breeding Symposium website is at http://agronomy.unl.edu/plant-breeding-symposium
