What: A Workshop/Field Day designed to provide an introductory overview of a hybrid breeding program. The event begins in a classroom setting, i.e., the Workshop, where participants are introduced to basic hybrid breeding terminology and an overview of the structure and logistics associated with a hybrid breeding program. The event continues with a trip to the UNL maize breeding nursery, i.e., the Field Day, where participants see a live hybrid breeding nursery, as described in the Workshop, and will see make hand pollinations. The Workshop/Field is presented from a strong industry perspective and is largely based upon hybrid maize breeding.
Why? There are many individuals actively involved in plant breeding and genetic research who are never exposed to the “end-to-end”, holistic process of breeding a hybrid crop. Even breeders of self-pollinated crops sometimes struggle to understand the complexities of hybrid breeding. This Workshop/Field Day is designed to give the non-hybrid breeder, or any other interested individual an overview of the structure and complexity of a comprehensive hybrid breeding program for which the end goal is release or commercialization of a genetically improved hybrid cultivar.
For Whom? The Workshop/Field Day is for anyone who has an interest in plant breeding and wants to extend his/her knowledge in hybrid breeding. While minimal prior exposure to plant genetics and plant breeding, albeit either through formal courses or practical experience, will benefit participants, topics covered are largely introductory. Any potential participant having questions regarding background knowledge or expertise should contact the Workshop Leads. All are welcome.
