Phosphorus, potassium and sulfur are essential plant nutrients and, if soil levels are limited, must be adequately supplied to crops to ensure optimal yield. Adding fertilizer containing these nutrients, as well as nitrogen, iron, zinc, and occasionally boron, is sometimes necessary for optimal yield for Nebraska crops. For phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and zinc (Zn) soil testing is the best way to determine if the availability of these nutrients is low enough to require fertilization.

New Hybrid-Maize improves corn yield predictions under drought stress Wednesday, March 1, 2017
Crop simulation models are powerful tools to guide research, education, and extension as well as to inform policy making. After 10 years of extensive use of the Hybrid-Maize model in research and extension, the model developers, including Haishun Yang, Patricio Grassini and Ken Cassman of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, have integrated changes to better simulate drought stress.

In their fifth year of competing in the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Collegiate Turf Bowl, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln team finished in the top 10 for the first time, with eighth place.

Nebraska Crops Team takes third at Iowa State Thursday, February 23, 2017
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Crops Judging Team placed third at the Iowa State University Crops Contest on Feb. 11. This is the second time Nebraska placed in the top three since the contest began in 2013.

A brown-bag presentation on nut trees for Nebraska will be held March 2 at noon on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus in 150 Keim Hall. The presentation will get down to a nuts and bolts approach for growing high quality edible nuts, wood and other nut tree products, and include a larger discussion about other options for edible landscapes.

SciPop Talk explores the healing power of plants Wednesday, February 22, 2017
Researcher Ellen Paparozzi will discuss "The Healing Power of Plants" in the next SciPop Talk at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Adele Coryell Hall Learning Commons. The talk is free and open to the public. Paparozzi, professor of agronomy and horticulture, will explain how plants enhance the environment and influence lives. In her research, Paparozzi focuses on plant nutrition and anatomy, floriculture and ornamental horticulture, plant physiology and production ecology.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln agronomy doctoral students Zahoor Ganie and Parminder Chahal and postdoc Debalin Sarangi took top honors at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Weed Science Society of America held Feb. 6-9 in Tucson, Arizona. They work with Amit Jhala, assistant professor of agronomy and horticulture and Nebraska Extension weed specialist.

Amit Jhala, University of Nebraska–Lincoln assistant professor of agronomy and horticulture and Extension weed specialist, was awarded the Early Career Outstanding Weed Scientist Award by the Weed Science Society of America. This award recognizes early career scientists who have demonstrated originality, creativity and have made a notable contribution to weed science and have potential for continued excellence in research, extension and/or teaching.
