Clint Beiermann, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln agronomy doctoral student specializing in weed science, received second place in the Weeds of Agronomic Crops Graduate Student Paper Contest at the Western Society of Weed Science Annual Meeting in Garden Grove, California March 12-15. He also received an Elena Sanchez Memorial WSWS Outstanding Student Scholarship.
Beiermann’s winning presentation was titled “Integrating Crop Rotation and Herbicide Programs to Improve Control of Problematic Weed Species in Sugarbeet.”
His research focus is to develop weed control techniques to better manage late emerging weeds in western Nebraska cropping systems. He is studying ways to manage herbicide resistant Palmer amaranth in corn, dry bean and sugarbeet. Beiermann is also investigating emergence characteristics of nightshade species to better implement control.
The Elena Sanchez Memorial Scholarship is awarded to three outstanding undergraduate and/or graduate WSWS student members who attend and present at the WSWS annual meeting. Scholarship recipients are evaluated on their contribution of research to the discipline of weed science and to WSWS objectives. Academic record and scholarly achievements, potential contributions to the future of weed science and participation in extracurricular pursuits contributing to the advancement of weed science, natural resource management or education and mentoring are also evaluated when selecting recipients.
Beiermann is advised by Nevin Lawrence, assistant professor of agronomy and integrated weed management specialist, and Amit Jhala, associate professor of agronomy and extension weed management specialist. Beiermann works at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
The WSWS is a professional and scientific society of western weed scientists and managers. WSWS objectives are to foster and encourage education and research in weed science, cooperation among state, federal and private agencies in solution of weeds and to support legislation governing weed control programs, weed research and education. WSWS also supports the Weed Science Society of America and fosters state and regional organizations and agencies interested in weed control.
