Range Management Club wins social media contest

October 25, 2022

Range Management Club members Sheridan Wilson (from left), Lydia Regier, Jacob VanDress and Sadie Ference explain why ‘We’re all farmers at heart’ in an Instagram Reel produced by the club for Beck’s/U.S. Farm Report social media contest held at Nebraska Sept. 15.

The U.S. Farm Report College Roadshow, sponsored by Beck’s, came to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s East Campus for a live taping on Sept. 15 in front of the Dinsdale Family Learning Commons.

Beck’s and the U.S. Farm Report teamed up to host a social media contest where campus clubs or organizations who are passionate about agriculture could compete to win $1,500 from Beck’s. The guidelines of the contest were to film a 2-minute or less video with the theme ‘We’re all farmers at heart because…’

Many Range Management Club members have an agricultural background or they just care about natural resources, so they decided to participate. They put together an Instagram Reel that can be seen on the club’s Instagram account at @unl_range_management_club.

Four members of the club including Sheridan Wilson, Lydia Regier, Jacob VanDress and Sadie Ference participated in the contest. They filmed short videos explaining why they were ‘farmers at heart.’ Their reasons ranged from animal science lab research to cattle management and farming, to local food production, to pollinator diversity. Later in the day, Beck’s announced the Range Management Club was the winner. Sheridan Wilson, the club vice president, and adviser Jessica Windh were there to accept the check.

The $1,500 prize money will help fund the club’s trip to the annual Society for Range Management convention in February of 2023 in Boise, Idaho.

Every year, the Range Management Club travels to the convention to participate in the undergraduate exams (Plant Identification and Undergraduate Range Management Exam) and other contests such as extemporaneous speaking and Range Cup, a poster presentation. The club members also participate in workshops, listen to talks from range experts and more.

Thanks to Beck’s, the club has a jump start on its fundraising!
