Aaron Barnhouse's Internship Experience

About Me

Aaron Barnhouse is a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in plant and landscape systems with an emphasis in turfgrass science and management and minoring in business. In the summer of 2025, he interned for the Denver Broncos as a part of the grounds crew, working at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit in Englewood, Colorado.

Internship Responsibilities

Over the course of his internship, Barnhouse managed the Denver Broncos' three natural-grass practice fields, as well as 23 acres of surrounding landscaping. He and the grounds crew mowed, painted, fertilized, sprayed pesticides and fungicides, and anything else they could to keep the field at an optimal level for training camp, practices and other activities. In addition to field maintenance, he mowed, trimmed, fertilized, watered and controlled the plants and grass in the facility's surrounding landscaping.

Learning Opportunities

Barnhouse learned how to run a verticutter, how to top dress with sand properly, how to ensure optimal watering efficiency with some occasional syringes during the hot summer days, how to paint the fields, how to properly calculate N, P and K amounts in a fertilizer application, how to work well with others and how to control and maintain an optimal training environment, all while focusing on the players' safety above all else.

Future Career Goals

Barnhouse's main career goal is to become a head groundskeeper of a collegiate or professional athletic sports field, which he hopes will be possible by using all that he has learned from the classroom and his internships to guide him.
