Description: Provides students with an understanding of the genetic basis for variation observed among crop varieties and weed populations as well as insights into the development of new traits in crop varieties. Application of classical and molecular genetic principles to the explanation of variation observed in plant families and populations. Interpretation of information gathered from whole plant trait observation and from molecular analysis. Relationships between crops and weeds are discussed. Examples from genetic studies on both crop and weed species are presented for student evaluation and relations and are the basis of the course
Prerequisites: Admission to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Strong background/prior coursework in plant science, genetics and/or biology are recommended.
