The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture proudly recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in extension, research, service, and/or teaching. These awards honor individuals whose work significantly contributes to the advancement of science, education, and extension/outreach in Agronomy and Horticulture. Each awardee will be honored with a plaque and will receive a $500 professional development award. The department Promotion and Tenure committee and Peer Evaluation Committee can suggest potential faculty members at assistant and associate professor level for these awards to Department Awards Committee. The Department Leadership team can suggest potential candidates at professor level. The department award committee will review submitted nominations and select award candidates. Faculty member can self-nominate or a nominator can submit a nomination.
Excellence in Extension Award
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
The Excellence in Extension Award is presented to a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture who has significantly contributed to the department’s extension mission through impactful programming and positive stakeholder outcomes. This award recognizes a faculty member who has effectively translated research into practice, supporting producers/ranchers, communities, and stakeholders with science-based, practical solutions and recommendations that improve profitability and environment.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Nominee must be a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.
- Faculty who has received any outstanding service award from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture are ineligible for three subsequent years.
- Faculty cannot receive the same award more than once in the same category.
Excellence in Research Award
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
The Excellence in Research Award recognizes a faculty member from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture who has significantly contributed to the department’s research mission through outstanding research programs.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Nominee must have been a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.
- Faculty members who have previously received an outstanding service award in any category from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture are ineligible for three subsequent years.
- Faculty cannot receive the same award more than once in the same category.
Excellence in Teaching Award
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
The Excellence in Teaching Award is presented to a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and contributions to the department’s teaching mission.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Nominee must have been a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture and must have been actively engaged in teaching.
- Faculty members who have previously received an outstanding service award in any category from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture are not eligible for another award for the following three years.
- Faculty cannot receive the same award more than once in the same category.
Xtra Service Award

The Xtra Service Award recognizes a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture who demonstrates exceptional dedication by consistently “going beyond the call of duty” in fulfilling their professional responsibilities.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Nominee must have served as a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.
- Faculty members who have previously received an outstanding service award in any category from the Department of Agronomy & Horticulture are not eligible for another award for the following three years.
- Faculty cannot receive the same award more than once in the same category.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture. It recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated sustained excellence and impact throughout their career in research, teaching, extension, or service. The recipient has made significant and lasting contributions to the advancement of agronomic and horticultural sciences, mentoring future generations, and elevating the department’s mission at the local, national, and international levels. This award celebrates a legacy of leadership, dedication, and scholarly distinction over the span of a remarkable professional journey.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Nominee must have served as a faculty member in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture at least for 15 years.
- Faculty members who have previously received an outstanding service award in any category from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture are not eligible for another award for the following three years.
- Faculty cannot receive the same award more than once in the same category.
