A new University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus farm has been established with goals to nourish the community, spur innovation and build local food systems capacity.
The Husker Produce Farm was developed by Sam Wortman, associate professor and environmental horticulturist in agronomy and horticulture, along with an advisory team that includes Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources faculty and extension educators passionate about agriculture, communities and food.
Husker Produce is a $90,000 grant recipient of the We Give Blood Drive competition award from Abbott and the Big Ten. The Division of Student Life at Nebraska was awarded $400,000 toward projects led by faculty and staff to improve the health and well-being of UNL students and communities across Nebraska.
The City of Lincoln Food System Plan, released in 2023, calls for increased access to healthy food for all and increased investments into local food systems. Recognizing food insecurity in the community, Wortman wanted to answer this call to action.
“The farm plans to produce and distribute fresh fruits and vegetables in our community and improve access to healthy, affordable foods,” Wortman said. “We are also exploring an exciting new partnership with UNL Dining Services to feature crops like sweet corn, watermelon and cabbage at campus events and in dining halls this year.”
The farm will begin spring planting in April, headed up by Collin Eaton, Husker Produce Farm manager.
Right now Husker Produce is taking applications for student volunteers, paid interns and Local Food Incubator Program residents for the 2026 growing season. Click here for more information on these three options.
Candidates who are interested in local food systems and food security; learning how to grow herbs, vegetables and fruit on a commercial scale; and/or testing a new production method, product, crop or technology in a low-risk environment, should apply.
Applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis through March 31.
