Sema Kaplan and Mahmut Kaplan are visiting scholars from Turkey in Lincoln for about a year to learn and collaborate with researchers at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The Kaplans came to Nebraska in October with their 6-year-old daughter.

Sema Kaplan received a doctorate in Soil Science in 2021. She is a research assistant in the Soil Science Department at Erciyes University Agricultural Faculty in Turkey. Her research focus is on soil management, soil erosion, soil physics and soil degradation.

Mahmut Kaplan also works at Erciyes University. He is a crop scientist and well published on forage and food quality.

Sema Kaplan is working with Professor Humberto Blanco in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture where she is working on wind erosion measurements, data assessment, wind erosion modeling and geostatistics.

“The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is one of the most respected institutions in the United States,” Sema Kaplan said. Having the opportunity to work here with people in their professional areas makes me excited to learn new techniques and blend them with my focus area. Also, I can build new friendships with people from different countries and cultures.”

Mahmut Kaplan is working in the Department of Plant Pathology and he is conducting research on plant breeding with Nebraska’s Amit Mitra.
