SCHOLARSHIPS
The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture offers undergraduate scholarships to incoming freshmen, transfer students and currently enrolled students in the agronomy, plant and landscape systems and plant biology majors annually. More than $170,000 was awarded to 116 students in the 2025-26 academic year. In addition to departmental scholarships, students may receive scholarships from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and external businesses and organizations.

CASNR Scholarships
CASNR provides more than $1 million in scholarships each year. Nearly 40% of CASNR students received either college or departmental scholarships.
University Scholarships
97% of first-year students are offered a scholarship or grant to attend Nebraska.
External Scholarships
Many organizations outside of the university offer scholarships to help college-bound students. The university's Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid has created a large list of these scholarships.
DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Freshman Scholarships
The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture Freshman Scholarships are awarded based on information provided on the university's admission application. To be considered for the first round of freshman scholarships, students must be admitted to a major in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture by January 5, 2026. No separate application is needed for freshman scholarships.
Transfer and Upperclassman Scholarships
The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture Upperclassman Scholarships are awarded based on scholastic achievement, professional goals and participation in major-related activities. This application is for current University of Nebraska-Lincoln students in the agronomy, plant and landscape systems and plant biology majors. Applications are due April 19, 2026. One application will make you eligible for most departmental scholarships.

Agronomy and Horticulture Department Scholarship
Freshman-senior academic standing.
David Larsen and Barbara Hinterlong Larsen Memorial Scholarship
Minimum required GPA of 3.0. Preference to graduates of Minden High School and students with financial need. Freshman academic standing, except for renewals.
M. Rosalind Morris Scholarship
Minimum required GPA of 3.0. Required minimum award of $800 and expressed desire to pursue a career in major related area following graduation. Preference to students who have demonstrated financial need.
Ken Good Scholarship
Preference for graduates of a Nebraska high school. Required minimum award of $1000. Renewable with 3.0 or better GPA. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Frances-Hussell - M.K. McCarty Scholarship
Preference to students with demonstrated financial need. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Holoubek Organic Food Production and Sales Scholarship
Awarded to students who have a career interest in organic food production with sales and marketing of organic products. Preference to students with demonstrated financial need and students pursuing a minor in the Engler Entrepreneurship program. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Henry Beachell Scholarship
Preference to students with demonstrated financial need. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Dr. Franklin D. Keim Scholarship
Awarded to students who are teaching assistants in plant science, genetics, plant breeding or other closely related agronomy courses. Junior-senior academic standing.
David T. Lewis Scholarship
Awarded to students based upon their potential contribution to their field. Preference to students with demonstrated financial need. Freshman-senior academic standing.

Henry Beachell Scholarship
Recipient must be a freshman.
FC Roeth Agronomy Scholarship
Agronomy major. Preference to students with demonstrated financial need. Sophomore-senior academic standing.
Myron M. and Katharine Shawver Keim Scholarship
Agronomy major with demonstrated financial need. Recipients must be graduates of a Nebraska high school. Freshman-senior academic standing.
NUtech Ventures Soybean Breeding
Requires expressed desire to pursue a career or have post-graduate study interest in soybean breeding. Junior-senior academic standing.
Dr. Robert A. Olson Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to students with a strong interest in soils, including interest or potential interest in conducting graduate-level research. May be renewed. Junior-senior academic standing.
Keith and Alvina Strough Memorial Scholarship
Agronomy major with demonstrated financial need. Preference to graduates of Nebraska high schools located in Gage, Jefferson, Johnnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson and Thayer counties. Freshman academic standing.
Orville A. Vogel Agronomy Scholarship
Agronomy major. Expressed desire to work in crop production and soil fertility after graduation. Minimum required GPA of 3.0. Required award of $1000. May be renewed. Junior-senior academic standing.
Professor JC Russel Memorial Scholarship
Preference to students with interest in soil conservation. Sophomore-senior academic standing.
Dale and Marian Brainard Smith
Minimum required GPA of 3.0. Required minimum award of $1500. May be renewed. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Wylie R. Ward Agronomy Scholarship
Awarded to students with an expressed interest in careers involving plant breeding, genetics or crop production. Freshman-senior academic standing.
John C. Swinbank Memorial Agronomy Scholarship
Recipients must be graduates of a Nebraska high school and have demonstrated financial need. May be renewed. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Henry J. Kroese Production Scholarship
Preference to students with an interest in field management with public or private agronomic research organization. Preference to junior academic standing.
Nebraska Independent Crop Consultant Association Leonard A. Johnsen Memorial Scholarship
Preference to students with current or previous work experience in a crop consulting business. Minimum required GPA of 2.5. Requires demonstrated financial need. Sophomore academic standing.
Dick Monson Scholarship
Freshman-senior academic standing.
Charles and Alma Marshall Education Leadership Scholarships
Required academic excellence and future potential. Sophomore-senior academic standing.
Girardin Family Scholarship
Preference to students with an interest in agribusiness, range science or turfgrass science. May be renewed. Junior-senior academic standing.
Ralph A. Elliott Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a student with potential for a successful career in the field of agronomy and who is dedicated to his/her studies. Requires demonstrated financial need. May be renewed. Junior-senior academic standing.
Robinson Family Scholarship
Awarded to students with an expressed interest in seed development and/or production. Preference to Plant Biology majors and/or students with an interest in seed. Minimum amount of $1000. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Carl W. Mortenson Jr. Scholarship
Preference to students with interest in returning to farm life after graduation. Must be an agronomy major and a graduate from a high school located in Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenna, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff, Sheridan or Sioux county. Graduates from a high school in Arthur, Chase, Dundy, Grant, Keither or Perkins county may be considered if there are no students from the previous list. Freshman-senior academic standing.

Blanchard Horticulture Excellence Scholarship
Freshman-senior academic standing.
Clara S. Tillotson (Nee Staads) Memorial Scholarship
Required outstanding academic ability. May be renewed with GPA of 3.0 or above. Preference to incoming freshman.
UNL Northern Nut Tree Research Scholarship
Expressed interest in nut tree research and development. Sophomore-senior academic standing.
Roger D. Uhlinger Memorial Scholarship
Expressed interest in pursuing a career in the area of horticulture after graduation. Minimum required GPA of 3.0. May be renewed. Sophomore-senior academic standing.
John Evasco and Ruth Willsie Evasco Memorial Student Scholarship
Preference to students with an expressed interest in landscape design. Preference to students with demonstrated financial need. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Garden Club of Lincoln Scholarship
Freshman-senior academic standing.
Stock Seed Farms Horticulture Scholarship
Awarded to students with an expressed desire to pursue a career in turf or native plants. Freshman academic standing.
C.C. Wiggans & Martha C. Wiggans Memorial Scholarship
Preference to students with an expressed interest in pomology. Required academic excellence and moral character. Freshman-senior academic standing.
Retail Florists Scholarship
Preference to students in programs related to floriculture. Second preference for students in programs relating to ornamentals and greenhouse management and/or general horticulture. Recipients must be graduates of a Nebraska high school and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Junior-senior academic standing.
Maria Basso Phillips Scholarship
Expressed interest in ornamental horticulture. Awarded $2000 over junior and senior years.
Keith Weidler Memorial Scholarship
Required turfgrass management or related major. Minimum required GPA of 2.5. Junior academic standing.
Kenneth L. Miller Scholarship
Required course of study in turfgrass management and pursuing a career in golf course management. Requires demonstrated financial need. Sophomore-senior academic standing.
Wayne Whitney Scholarship
Preference to students with demonstrated potential in horticulture and whose interests are assisting the public through dissemination of horticultural knowledge. Junior-senior academic standing.
SCHOLARSHIPS WITH SEPARATE APPLICATIONS
NCIA Dennis Thompson – Crop Improvement Scholarship
Must have an expressed interest in majoring in agronomy. Preference to graduates of any Class B, C or D high school located in Nebraska counties of Arthur, Banner, Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Buffalo, Box Butte, Chase, Cherry, Cheyenne, Custer, Dawson, Dawes, Deuel, Dundy, Franklin, Frontier, Furnas, Garden, Garfield, Gosper, Grant, Harlan, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Holt, Kearney, Keith, Keya Paha, Kimball, Lincoln, Logan, Loup, McPherson, Morrill, Perkins, Phelps, Red Willow, Rock, Scottsbluff, Sheridan, Shearman, Sioux, Thomas or Valley. High school classification will be based on the current classification system used by the Nebraska School Activities Association. $1000 award. Freshman academic standing.

Nebraska Certified Seed Scholarship, applicants must be currently enrolled graduate students at the University of Nebraska. Candidates should be pursuing advanced studies in plant breeding or a closely related field within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. A demonstrated interest in the seed industry and involvement in relevant research or professional activities will be favorably considered.
