Managing cover crops to enhance soil ecosystem services in soils vulnerable to environmental pressures

The overall objective of this study is to better understand how cover crops improve the ecosystem services of environmentally sensitive soils. The specific objectives are:

  • Assess the impacts of combination of different cover crop planting and termination dates on nitrate leaching and related soil properties in a sandy soil in northeastern Nebraska.
  • Assess the impacts of combination of different cover crop planting and termination dates on water erosion and related soil properties in a sloping soil in southeastern Nebraska.
  • Use water quality models to simulate impacts of combination of different cover crop planting and termination dates on nitrate leaching and water erosion.
