AGRONOMY MAJOR

Teaching Garden

The agronomy major provides knowledge in managing field crop systems and includes learning experiences in crop and soil management, plant genetics, and physiology. You will gain skills and knowledge needed to optimize and diversify crop systems to preserve soil and water resources while growing food, fiber, and fuel for the world. Students will complement their program of study with two additional areas of professional specialization provided through emphases and/or minors.

Agronomy Major

PLANT AND LANDSCAPE SYSTEMS MAJOR

The Plant and Landscape Systems major aims to educate and develop professionals to design and manage complex horticultural, landscape, and turfgrass systems. The three primary options are horticulture, landscape design and management, and turfgrass science and management. Additionally, students will complement their program of study with two additional areas of professional specialization provided through emphases and/or minors.

PLANT BIOLOGY MAJOR

The plant biology major is for students who want to explore plants at the following levels: Molecular (biotechnology option); Cellular and organismal (biological, biochemical/chemical sciences); Whole plant/applied physiological (horticulture and agronomy courses); and Ecological (ecology and management option).

Clubs and Teams

The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture has six student organizations including the Agronomy Club, Horticulture Club, Range Management Club, Turf Club, Pi Alpha Xi (National Honor Society for Horticulture).

The department sponsors extracurricular, intercollegiate contest teams which compete at both regional and national levels. These include the Crops Judging team, Soil Judging team, Weed Science team and Turf Bowl team.

Experiential Education

Get involved with faculty led research, teaching and community outreach experiences. Undergraduate creative activity and research projects are designed to promote undergraduate research in conjunction with a faculty advisor. The UCARE program solicits applications from eligible undergraduates for either academic year or summer awards.

Faculty also offer short-term study abroad opportunities to learn more about your academic discipline. Global Experiences has more information about these and other CASNR sponsored study tours.

Student Recognition

Our undergraduate students earn numerous awards, fellowships and honors. See the Undergraduate Student Award Winners.

Each semester, students having 12 university semester-graded hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.75 or above, are eligible for the CASNR Dean's List.

Our Student Ambassadors are undergraduate students selected to promote the department to prospective students and guests.
