Midwest Hop Producers provide assistance for UNL East Campus hop yardJune 15, 2016

A big THANK-YOU to Midwest Hop Producers for providing the labor and materials for our new one-fourth acre hop yard installed at University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus. This 20-foot tall commercial trellis system is a tremendous asset to our research and extension education.

New hops planting completed in a portion of the newly installed hops yard provided by Midwest Hop Producers.  This collection of plants will be used for evaluation of herbicides and other pest monitoring and controls.

“We would like to observe how plants respond to chemical treatments within our environmental conditions,” Associate Professor Stacy Adams said. “Through this planting, controlled applications of various chemicals and fertilizers can be used and observed for their appropriateness in a Nebraska hop yard.”

Portable field hops harvester purchasedApril 5, 2016

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Department of Agronomy and Horticulture has purchased a portable field hops harvester. This unit is designed with the small grower in mind (under 2 acres) and providing efficient harvesting of cones from the bine in the field. This greatly reduces the amount of bulk by removing the “trash” at the grower’s site. The hop cones can be securely packaged into totes that can be quickly transported to the drying equipment or to a hops handling/buying cooperative. We are excited for the generosity of the University and the equipment provider for their support. Keep an eye for a field demonstration in August or early September!
