Plant biology graduates earn prestigious awards

Two plant biology majors who will earn Bachelor of Science degrees May 8 are being recognized for prestigious awards.

Samuel “Sam” Polk, a plant biology major in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, is one of 65 University of Nebraska–Lincoln students who will be recognized as Chancellor’s Scholars during the undergraduate commencement ceremonies May 8 at Memorial Stadium.

Chancellor’s Scholars are students who have maintained 4.0 grade-point averages on all collegiate work at Nebraska and elsewhere.

Polk was advised by Professor Don Lee and Assistant Professor of Practice Christian Elowsky.

He plans to attend graduate school for a teaching certificate to become a high school biology teacher.

Caleb Wehrbein, a plant biology major in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, has been awarded the Martin Massengale Outstanding Senior Award. Students receiving this award are chosen by the faculty and have shown exemplary character, high achievement in their classes and involvement on campus. The award honors Massengale, the president and chancellor emeritus and founding director of the Center for Grassland Studies and Foundation Distinguished Professor.

Wehrbein will earn a Bachelor of Science degree in plant biology May 8. He has been advised by Associate Professor David Holding.

Wehrbein plans to continue his education at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
