47 Agronomy and Horticulture students receive degrees

Wednesday, May 29, 2024

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln conferred 3,567 degrees during its May commencement exercises.

The 3,484 graduates are from 64 countries; 46 U.S. states and Puerto Rico; and about 230 Nebraska communities.

The Bob Devaney Sports Center hosted a ceremony for College of Law graduates May 3; Pinnacle Bank Arena held a ceremony for students earning graduate and professional degrees May 17; and Memorial Stadium hosted a ceremony for undergraduates May 18.

Forty-seven students in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture received degrees.

Kevin Dockery, a plant biology major, and Mason Rutgers, an agronomy major, completed the requirements of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Honors Program. To graduate from the Honors Program, students must maintain at least a 3.5 grade-point average, complete a culminating senior project or research thesis, and fulfill other curricular requirements.

Dockery will pursue a doctoral degree in molecular genetics at the University of Toronto. Rutgers will pursue a master’s degree in crop and soil sciences at Michigan State University and coach the MSU Soil Judging Team.

Plant and Landscape Systems majors Elaina Madison and John Tines were recognized as Chancellor’s Scholars during undergraduate commencement ceremonies. Chancellor’s Scholars are students who have maintained 4.0 grade-point averages on all collegiate work at Nebraska and elsewhere. This is the highest academic honor awarded to graduating undergraduates.

Madison has a field apprenticeship position with Ryan Lawn & Tree in Omaha and Tines will be working at the Country Club of Lincoln through July. He is pursuing a job at a new golf course in Nashville, Tennessee.

Family, friends, faculty and staff celebrated and honored students at a graduate reception on May 17 in the Goodding Learning Center in Plant Sciences Hall.
