Waseem Hussain, University of Nebraska–Lincoln agronomy doctoral student, is an invited speaker at the Kansas State Plant Breeding and Genetics 2017 Symposium in Manhattan, Kansas on April 5. He has also been awarded the K-State PBG 2017 Symposium Travel Grant. Hussain works with Stephen Baenzinger, agronomy professor and Wheat Growers Presidential Chair.

Rakkar recipient of graduate student travel fund Friday, March 24, 2017
Manbir Rakkar
The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture Graduate Committee has chosen Manbir Rakkar, an agronomy graduate student specializing in soil and water sciences, as the recipient of the 2017 Daniel T. Walters Graduate Student Travel Fund. This award provides up to $500 for expenses to present research at a professional meeting.

Junior faculty earn awards for excellence in research Thursday, March 23, 2017
The Agricultural Research Division of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln presented awards to three assistant professors on March 22, in recognition of excellence in research. This included Department of Agronomy and Horticulture assistant professors James Schnable and Dirac Twidwell.

Nebraska part of national research initiative to improve cover crops Thursday, March 23, 2017
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is part of a $6.6 million research initiative to promote soil health through the development and adoption of new cover crops across the United States. The initiative was launched March 22 by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research and The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, which is the lead institution.

Crops judging team takes second at NCTA competition Thursday, March 16, 2017
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Crops Judging Team placed second in the four-year college division at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture collegiate crops judging contest, March 11, in Curtis, Nebraska. Hosted by NCTA Agronomy, teams from four-year and two-year institutions completed four sections covering general agronomic knowledge, agronomic math, plant and seed identification and a lab practical.

Chuck and Barb Francis were honored with the Center for Rural Affairs’ 2017 Seventh Generation Award at an awards ceremony on March 10 in York, Nebraska. The Seventh Generation Award is a lifetime service award presented to an individual or individuals who have made major contributions in improving rural life and protecting the land and water.

Graduate student applications for 2017 WARI Scholarships are due Friday, March 17. The collaborative Water Advanced Research and Innovation (WARI) Fellowship Program is a dynamic and transformative program for students pursuing advanced academic research and/or other water-related careers.The program will award five University of Nebraska-Lincoln students with scholarships to India in 2017, where they will conduct research at top-level Indian institutions.

Project aims to develop agriculture, natural resource professionals Thursday, March 9, 2017
A new project at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln aims to prepare students to address the challenges of food production and the environment through hands-on learning experience and peer interaction. Funded by a $281,475 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the project will bring 24 students from across the country to Nebraska to conduct summer experiential internships related to their career interests and goals.

Spring Research Fair is April 4-5 Tuesday, March 7, 2017

Poster sessions that highlight students’ research, events for graduate students and a session on using restricted-access federal data are slated for the spring Research Fair April 4-5. The biannual event is sponsored by the Office of Research and Economic Development in cooperation with campus partners. The spring Research Fair is focused on student achievement and development, with a special session geared toward university researchers.
