NRES/ENVE 851: Soils, Water and Environmental Chemistry

Instructor(s): Steven Comfort

Number of Credit Hours: 4

Crosslistings: ENVE 851, NRES 451

Prerequisites: NRES/WATS/SOIL/PLAS/GEOL 361 or graduate standing.

Description: Environmental chemistry related to the fate and transport of organic contaminants in soil-water environments. Application of computer simulation models (i.e., MODFLOW) for predicting contaminant fate in aquifers. Basic chemical and biological principles of remediating contaminated soil and water.

Learning Outcomes/Course Objectives

  1. Review pertinent organic chemistry principles and soil matrix components.
  2. To describe in detail the processes that act upon organic chemicals once they enter the soil-water environment.
  3. To be able to predict the environmental fate of pollutants based on their chemical structure both by mathematical calculations and computer modeling (i.e., MODFLOW).
  4. To understand the chemistry underlying the techniques used to remediate contaminated soil and water.
