Researchers from wide range of disciplines advance plant genetics Wednesday, October 5, 2016
University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty from a wide range of disciples are working together to advance the field of plant genetics, specifically with sorghum. This was evidenced this past summer by interactions among faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students working with Melinda Yerka, agronomy research assistant professor and plant geneticist, to collect data from a field of grain sorghum varieties at the Agricultural Research & Development Center near Mead, Nebraska.

Twenty department faculty and staff honored for their service Wednesday, September 28, 2016
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln honored 895 faculty and staff for their years of service. The annual Service Awards are presented to university employees who complete years of service in five-year intervals. Employees who have worked 40-plus years at the university were recognized during Chancellor Ronnie Green’s first State of the University address on Sept. 22 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

UNL professor spreads positivity with floral design Tuesday, September 27, 2016
Stacy Adams spends hundreds of dollars every week on flowers for his class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His last order was $880, but the price was bumped up a bit because he had to add roses to the bill. But the associate professor of practice in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture said the expenses are a natural part of teaching a floral design course that attracts a little more than 100 students.

Scientific illustration exhibit at Love Library through November Friday, September 23, 2016
“Celebrating 10 Years of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators – Great Plains Chapter” exhibit of scientific illustrations by Great Plains Chapter members is on display through November at the University of Nebraska Love Library. The exhibit includes over 40 works of art along with tools, specimens and educational information about scientific illustration.

Elizabeth Pierson, a horticulture major at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been chosen for Lawn & Landscape magazine’s Richard Foster Award, which recognizes outstanding students planning careers in the landscape, lawn care or horticulture business.

Maharjan is new UNL soils and nutrient management specialist Tuesday, September 6, 2016
Bijesh Maharjan joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Agronomy and Horticulture faculty Sept. 6 as a soil and nutrient management specialist at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center. Maharjan will be responsible for conducting research and extension programs focused on improved soil productivity and precision nutrient management in irrigated, limited-irrigation and rain-fed crop and forage production systems in the Panhandle.

Christian Elowsky
Christian Elowsky joined the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture Sept. 1 as a new assistant professor of practice. His current appointment is 60 percent teaching of plant science courses including an introductory botany course. He also will be developing a plant anatomy course and other hands-on courses and labs.

Forty-two years have passed since Joe Keaschall stepped onto the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus as a self-described, farm-boy freshman from Ravenna, Nebraska. Now, he returns to his alma mater as an experienced scientist and research director with 38 years of plant breeding wisdom, looking forward to sharing his experiences and cutting-edge science with UNL graduate students.
