The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture Graduate Student Association hosted the Women in Science Workshop–Challenges in Academia and Industry, on Aug. 5 in Plant Sciences Hall. This one-day workshop brought together students, faculty, staff and industry representatives to bring awareness of the opportunities available to women in science to further their studies and achieve more representation in academia and industry.

Samantha Teten is recognized by Helena Chemical Company as the 2016 Outstanding West Central Division Intern award winner.
Samantha Teten, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln agronomy major, has been recognized as the Helena Chemical Company's 2016 Outstanding West Central Division Intern Award winner. Teten, a sophomore from Johnson, Nebraska, was selected from a competitive group of 59 interns throughout the Midwest for her outstanding performance.

Schnable co-authors study on gene regulation networks Friday, August 19, 2016
James Schnable, assistant professor of agronomy and horticulture, co-authored a study published in the Aug. 18 issue of the journal Science. His research focuses on methods to combine genomic data from different grain crops — like corn, sorghum, and millet — to make it easier to figure out the function of genes in individual crops.

UNL horticulture major awarded American Floral Endowment scholarship Wednesday, August 10, 2016

The American Floral Endowment has awarded Jaclyn Nelson, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln horticulture major, the Jacob and Rita Van Namen Marketing Scholarship for 2016. Nelson, a senior minoring in agribusiness, is the owner of Marie's Floral in Wallace, Nebraska. She interned last summer at Tessfresh Flowers in San Diego, California and this summer interned at Bachman's in Minnesota as part of the AFE Mosmiller Internship Program.

Restoring prairie and fighting wildfire with drone-launched fire balls Thursday, August 4, 2016
Ecologist Dirac Twidwell wants to change the way we think about prescribed burns. The University of Nebraska professor says he can harness extreme fire to restore grasslands on the Great Plains. And, with the help of the Nebraska Intelligent MoBile Unmanned Systems (NIMBUS) Lab, he has created a small drone that launches ping-pong balls-sized "dragon eggs" of fire to help him do it safely and cheaply.
