Learning by exploring: Agronomy, horticulture instructors embrace outdoor opportunities

First-year agronomy major Emily Hanson is taking one of the beginning courses in her degree, Plant Science 131, remotely this semester. Most of her days consist of watching Zoom lectures and submitting assignments from her dorm room — but to earn additional points, Hanson also gets out and walks through East Campus each week to find a plant that illustrates a concept she’s learned in class.
Clyde Ogg, Extension Educator in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, received a Life Membership in the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators in recognition of dedicating his professional career to pesticide safety education.
Get to know University of Nebraska–Lincoln student Lily Woitaszewski, a senior agronomy major who served as a department student ambassador. Woitaszewski is excited to be back on East Campus taking classes and staying involved in Agronomy Club and Commodity Marketing Club.
This fall’s Agronomy and Horticulture Seminar Series begins Sept. 11 with “Physiological and Molecular Perspective on Seed Development Under Higher Temperatures” presented by Nebraska’s Puneet Paul and “Organic Carbon Materials for Nutrient Retention in Nebraska Soils” by Nebraska’s Jennifer Cooper.
Diego Jarquin, University of Nebraska–Lincoln Department of Agronomy and Horticulture research assistant professor, was awarded the 2020 National Association of Plant Breeders Early Career Scientist Award during their virtual conference hosted by Nebraska, August 17-20.

Bringing Improved Protein Quality to Popcorn

David Holding, associate professor in agronomy and horticulture, became involved with popcorn breeding in 2013 when ConAgra Foods brought their popcorn breeding program to Nebraska. Holding’s lab focused on breeding independent introgressions resulting from several different QPM lines plus several elite popcorn inbreds. The result was a diverse pallet for hybrid production to take advantage of hybrid vigor.

After months of planning and preparation, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has launched a weeklong effort to prepare more than 480 classrooms for students’ return to campus.
Seven Department of Agronomy and Horticulture doctoral students are recipients of scholarships and fellowships for their high scholastic merit and research potential.
