Rodrigo Werle started Friday as the new cropping systems specialist at the UNL West Central Research and Extension Center at North Platte. An assistant professor in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Werle will have a split appointment between research (50%) and extension (50%). He replaces Greg Kruger, who is the new weed science and application technology specialist.

Martha Mamo was named Aaron Douglas/John E. Weaver Professor of Agronomy and Horticulture. Mamo has received numerous awards recognizing her innovativeness and creativity, including the University of Nebraska Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award in 2015.

James Specht, emeritus professor of agronomy and horticulture, received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the United Soybean Board. The honor, the highest award given by the USB, is reserved for an individual, organization or group that has made an outstanding positive impact on the soybean industry.

The Graduate Committee in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture has chosen Michael Sindelar, an agronomy graduate student specializing in soil and water sciences, as the recipient of the 2016 Daniel T. Walters Graduate Student Travel Fund. This award provides up to $500 for expenses to present research at a professional meeting.
