Grower, researcher say Nebraska needs to step slowly into hemp market Thursday, August 8, 2019
Midwest Hop Producers was one of 10 growers to be randomly selected to participate in the first year of the state's Hemp Cultivation/Processing Research Program, established by a bill (LB657) passed by the Nebraska Legislature and signed into law this spring by Gov. Pete Ricketts.

Paparozzi named Pi Alpha Xi Fellow Tuesday, August 6, 2019

Ellen Paparozzi, a professor of agronomy and horticulture, was named a Pi Alpha Xi Fellow July 24 at the American Society for Horticultural Science annual conference in Las Vegas. The Fellows Award is the highest honor Pi Alpha Xi bestows on its members in recognition of dedicated service and distinguished leadership to horticulture, students, colleagues in the academy and the public. Paparozzi is the 23rd Fellow to be selected in the 31 years of the award.

Stalk-worn sensor to measure crops’ water use Wednesday, July 31, 2019
Wearable technology will soon move from wrist to stalk, swapping measures of blood flow and respiration for sap flow and transpiration. Their design won’t have anyone confusing growing season with fashion season, but the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s James Schnable and Iowa State University colleagues are developing a Fitbit-like sensor to be worn by corn and other thick-stemmed crops.

Adam Striegel, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln Doctor of Plant Health student and an agronomy master's student specializing in weed science, received a North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Graduate Student Teaching Award at the 2019 NACTA Conference at the College of Southern Idaho. The award is in recognition of his commitment, excellence and scholarship in college teaching in agricultural disciplines.

Palmer amaranth, a member of the pigweed (Amaranthaceae) family, is one of the most troublesome weeds in corn and soybean production fields in Nebraska. Of particular concern is Palmer amaranth resistant to glyphosate in southcentral and west central Nebraska. To share research information on this topic, a Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer amaranth Management Field Day was held July 10 near Carleton, Nebraska.

Viticulture summer tailgates educate the novice, veteran grower Wednesday, July 17, 2019
The first of three University of Nebraska Viticulture Program tailgates was held July 2 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus. Attendees were given a first look at the new high tunnel table grape project followed by visits to the ongoing wine grape research vineyard which boasts over 30 cultivars and breeder selections being tested.

R Street renovation features bike lanes, parking adjustments Tuesday, July 16, 2019
Craig Chandler | University Communication The renovation along R Street will temporarily close all parking between 12th and 14th streets starting July 18. When complete, the project will feature bike lanes, sidewalk improvements and parallel parking from 12th to 16th streets.
A roadway renovation along R Street between 12th and 16th streets will introduce dedicated bike lanes, enhanced aesthetics and improved pedestrian safety to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s main drag. The university’s initial design for the project grew from a class project completed by Ann Powers, a research technician with agronomy and horticulture and former landscape services employee.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln weed management research was featured and demonstrated at Nebraska Extension’s 2019 Weed Management Field Day on June 26 at the university's South Central Agricultural Laboratory (SCAL) near Clay Center. Amit Jhala, associate professor and extension weed management specialist organized and led the tour.
