Nebraska-Croatia crop research collaboration yields lasting benefits Thursday, February 8, 2018
While the connection might not seem immediately obvious, Nebraska and Croatia have something very much in common: corn (or maize, as it is often referred to abroad). This commodity commonality helped spark a research collaboration between a University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty member and graduate students and several faculty at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Zagreb (FAZ), which, among many wide-reaching benefits, just marked the third journal article accepted for publication stemming from the collaborative relationship.

Extension soil scientist and crop nutritionist Shapiro retires Wednesday, February 7, 2018
Charles Shapiro, agronomy and horticulture professor emeritus, officially retired after 34 years as the extension soil scientist and crop nutritionist at the University of Nebraska Northeast Research and Extension Center Haskell Agricultural Laboratory in Concord. Shapiro’s entire Nebraska career focused on improving the efficiency of corn and soybean growth through improved nutrient efficiency – getting more nutrients into a crop results in higher yields for Nebraska crop producers and to the producer and less potential loss to the environment.

Students take top honors at 2017 North Central Weed Science Society Meeting Monday, January 29, 2018
Nine Department of Agronomy and Horticulture students took top honors at the 2017 North Central Weed Science Society Annual Meeting in St. Louis Dec. 4-7. The nine include graduate students Ethann Barnes, Parminder Chahal, Maxwel Coura Oliveira, Alexandre Tonon Rosa, Bruno Canella Vieira, Adam Striegel and Don Treptow and undergraduate students Trey Stephens and Barbara Vukoja.

Nebraska research assists state’s craft brewing industry Friday, January 19, 2018
From field and lab to brew kettle and marketplace, research from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is helping further the Cornhusker State’s burgeoning craft brewing industry. In the field, Nebraska’s Stacy Adams is leading the charge, guiding a multi-year study to see if hops can be grown locally and if the resulting pinecone-like blooms are viable as a niche revenue crop for producers.

Mitch Stephenson, assistant professor of agronomy and horticulture and forage and range management specialist at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center, received the Innovative Extension New Employee Award during extension’s fall conference in Kearney, Nebraska Nov. 28-30. This award recognizes extension workers in their first three years of service who have exhibited an innovative program that reaches new audiences in new ways.

33 earn degrees in December Wednesday, December 20, 2017
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln conferred 1,505 degrees during commencement exercises Dec. 15 and 16 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Thirty-three graduates from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture were invited to participate.

This will be my last article for CropWatch. I thank all who have helped make CropWatch the go-to source for unbiased interpretation and analysis of crop information. We don’t always have research on every subject, but we try and use the research we do have, our experience, and our knowledge to give informed suggestions.
