Rodriguez honored with CASNR Spirit Award Wednesday, May 11, 2016
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Agronomy and Horticulture graduate, Gustavo Rodriguez, was honored with the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Spirit Award at the CASNR Salute to Graduates on May 6. The Spirit Award recognizes a student whose spirit represents the class as a whole. Rodriguez, who hails from Ravenna, Nebraska, earned his degree in turfgrass & landscape management and graduated May 7.

Students named recipients of Milton E. Mohr Awards Program for Biotechnology Monday, May 2, 2016

Five Department of Agronomy and Horticulture students have been named recipients of the Milton E. Mohr 2016–2017 Awards Program which recognizes outstanding students in the sciences of biotechnology and engineering based on their academic performance and potential for accomplishments in their specific field.

74 faculty members earn promotion, tenure Friday, April 29, 2016

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln granted 74 faculty members a promotion and/or tenure in 2016. Greg Kruger, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, was promoted to associate professor and granted tenure. Kruger is a weed science and application technology specialist at the UNL West Central Research and Extension Center. Faculty were honored on April 26 during a celebration at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum.

Aerial 'fire drone' passes Homestead test Monday, April 25, 2016

An innovative University of Nebraska-Lincoln-designed drone designed to ignite prescribed fires in grasslands and forests was used successfully April 22 to burn 26 acres of restored tallgrass prairie at Homestead National Monument of America near Beatrice. Dirac Twidwell, a UNL rangeland expert, said the April 22 fire demonstrated how drones could make fires safer and easier to manage.

Agronomy senior is named Chancellor's Scholar Thursday, April 21, 2016

University of Nebraska–Lincoln agronomy major Neal Fulton, of Pleasanton, Nebraska, has been named a Chancellor's Scholar. Fulton, along with thirty-one other UNL seniors will be recognized as Chancellor's Scholars during the All-University Honors Convocation at 2 p.m. April 24 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th St.

Chancellor's Scholars are students who graduated in December or who will receive their degrees in May or August and have maintained 4.0 grade-point averages on all collegiate work at UNL and elsewhere.

Rodrigo Werle started Friday as the new cropping systems specialist at the UNL West Central Research and Extension Center at North Platte. An assistant professor in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Werle will have a split appointment between research (50%) and extension (50%). He replaces Greg Kruger, who is the new weed science and application technology specialist.

The crop physiology and production doctoral candidate just presented his dissertation on evaluating foliar micronutrient treatments as a tool to increase yields and biofortify (increase nutrient density) corn.

Martha Mamo was named Aaron Douglas/John E. Weaver Professor of Agronomy and Horticulture. Mamo has received numerous awards recognizing her innovativeness and creativity, including the University of Nebraska Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award in 2015.
