Hail Know, a project developed by a team of inventive Nebraska Extension faculty, received the Excellence in Extension Team award at the Nebraska Extension Fall Conference Annual Banquet Nov. 27 in Kearney. Faculty team members from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture include Roger Elmore, Extension cropping systems agronomist and agronomy professor, Chris Proctor, weed management Extension educator and Daren Redfearn, Extension forage crop residue specialist.

36 earn degrees in December Monday, December 17, 2018
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln awarded 1,551 degrees during commencement exercises Dec. 14 and 15. Thirty-six graduates from the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture were invited to participate.

Backyard Farmer receives Omtvedt Innovation Award for Team Tuesday, December 11, 2018
The Backyard Farmer team received the Omtvedt Innovation Award for Team at an Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources awards luncheon on Nov. 30 at the Nebraska East Union. IANR Harlan Vice Chancellor Mike Boehm presented the award.

Students find passion, friendship in soil judging team Tuesday, December 11, 2018
Getting their hands dirty is what the soil judging team at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln does best. Each year, the 16 to 18 members of the soil judging team take a class to prepare for competitions in the fall and spring semesters. According to Samantha Teten, a member who’s been on the team for four years, the members look at different soil characteristics like color, texture and structure. They then classify the soil and determine if it would be suitable for building houses, for gardening and more.

Nebraska plant scientist digs deeper into soybeans and soil bacteria Monday, December 10, 2018
If soybeans can take advantage of the air’s abundant supply of nitrogen, why does corn rely solely on nitrogen available in the soil? It’s no secret that soybeans have evolved a unique relationship with rhizobia, a common soil bacteria that converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form plants can use. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer is lauded as one of the biggest agricultural breakthroughs of the 20th century, sparking a boom in food production that supported a global population that grew from 1.6 billion to 6 billion.
